The Georgian government administration has released a Georgian-language letter it says was sent by US President Donald Trump in response to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's message marking the 250th anniversary of US Independence.
According to the administration's translation, Trump said he looked forward to strengthening cooperation with Georgia. An original or English-language copy of the letter had not been made public.
Message on Independence Day
The published text thanks Kobakhidze for his congratulations and describes Independence Day as a celebration of the principles of freedom, strength and resilience. It also refers to the friendship of partners that share respect for those ideals.
The letter says that cooperation in support of sovereignty, security and lasting prosperity could bring meaningful progress. It concludes by expressing hope for “a safer, more prosperous, and more peaceful future.”
Tbilisi seeks a reset
The exchange comes as the Georgian government says it wants to reset relations with Washington and restore the countries' strategic partnership through a specific roadmap.
At a US Independence Day event at the American Embassy in Tbilisi on July 1, Kobakhidze said Georgia was ready for direct dialogue on shared priorities, practical mechanisms for cooperation and measurable results. He called for a partnership based on mutual respect, fairness and a clear framework for cooperation.
Relationship remains under review
The Biden administration suspended the US-Georgia strategic partnership in November 2024 amid protests in Tbilisi, and later imposed sanctions on Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili. The Trump administration has not publicly reversed those decisions.
Contacts between the two governments have nevertheless increased in recent months. The Georgian administration presented the newly released letter as a further sign of engagement, while the status of the strategic partnership remains unchanged.
