Police and customs officers say they have stopped an alleged attempt to smuggle firearms-related items through Georgia’s Sarpi and Poti border checkpoints, detaining two people, including a foreigner.
Authorities said the seizure included about 500 live rounds, pneumatic guns, bullets, cartridge casings and 2.5 kilograms of gunpowder.
Items seized at border points
The Sarpi checkpoint is on the Georgian–Turkish border in Adjara, while Poti is a Black Sea port city and an important customs gateway. Officials did not say which items were found at each location, identify the detainees, or provide further details on the alleged route of the shipment.
Pneumatic guns, ammunition components and gunpowder can be subject to separate controls under Georgian law. The authorities described the case as a large illegal weapons shipment.
Criminal investigation opened
The case is being investigated under articles of Georgia’s Criminal Code that authorities said can carry a prison sentence of up to nine years.
The investigation is continuing. As with all criminal proceedings, the allegations must be assessed through the legal process and any court proceedings that follow.
Border controls remain in focus
The operation highlights the tight controls applied at Georgia’s land and maritime entry points. Sarpi is one of the country’s busiest crossings, particularly during the tourist season, while Poti handles substantial cargo traffic.
Authorities have not announced whether further detentions or seizures are expected in connection with the case.
