Georgia’s Free Business Association has called on the Finance Ministry to review the duty-free customs threshold for postal shipments and raise it from 300 lari to 900 lari for individuals.
The group says the existing limit no longer reflects current economic conditions or the pace of international trade.
Proposal for a higher limit
The association is launching an initiative focused on postal consignments imported by individuals. It proposes tripling the current threshold, above which customs clearance requirements apply.
In its statement, the group said the limit should be reassessed in light of changes in the economy and cross-border commerce.
Limit set in 2009
According to the association, the 300-lari threshold was introduced in 2009. It says that economic indicators in Georgia have changed substantially during the 17 years since then.
The organisation urged the Finance Ministry to take citizens’ interests into account when making its decision. It described a review and increase in the 300-lari threshold as an economically justified and necessary step.
The statement does not set out whether the ministry has responded to the proposal or announced a timetable for considering it.
