Work is advancing on a major expansion at Batumi’s Republican Hospital, one of Adjara’s main public medical facilities. The project adds a crisis coordination centre, an updated polyclinic and expanded hospital wards, according to officials overseeing the build.
Construction has entered the final stages, with facade cladding and interior fit-out now underway on the new blocks visible from surrounding streets. Scaffolding still covers much of the exterior, but the overall structure is largely complete — a shift from earlier phases focused on concrete and structural work.
What the project includes
The crisis coordination centre is intended to improve how the hospital responds to emergencies and mass-casualty events, linking clinical teams with regional authorities. The polyclinic upgrade aims to expand outpatient capacity — routine consultations, diagnostics and referrals — so fewer non-urgent cases rely on emergency departments.
Additional inpatient facilities should increase bed capacity for Batumi and the wider Black Sea coast, where summer population spikes and tourism put seasonal pressure on healthcare services.
Timeline and local impact
Officials expect the first facilities to open by the end of the year, though exact handover dates for each wing may be staggered as interior certification and equipment installation proceed. For residents and expats, the expansion is part of a broader push to modernise Adjara’s hospital network without requiring travel to Tbilisi for every specialist referral.
Until opening, existing Republican Hospital services continue from current buildings. Further announcements on departments moving into the new wings are expected closer to completion.
