The Youth Olympic Festival held its opening ceremony at Batumi’s Dynamo Arena on Sunday evening, marking the start of a multi-day programme for young athletes from across Georgia.
Organisers say more than 1,200 competitors from 12 regions will take part in events hosted in the city through 6 June. The festival brings together school-age and junior athletes for Olympic-style competition, with ceremonies, team parades and cultural performances forming part of the schedule.
What the festival involves
The Georgian Youth Olympic Festival is designed to identify talent and give young athletes competitive experience before national and international pathways. Batumi has hosted previous editions, using municipal sports infrastructure including Dynamo Arena and surrounding venues.
Adjara’s regional government and national sports bodies typically co-ordinate logistics, accommodation and transport for delegations arriving from Tbilisi, Kakheti, Samegrelo and other parts of the country. Exact discipline lists and daily timetables are published through official festival channels as the week progresses.
For Batumi residents, the event adds traffic and evening activity around the arena district but also fills hotels and restaurants during the early June window before peak summer tourism. Results and medal tables are expected to be updated daily until the closing programme on 6 June.
