Wizz Air will temporarily suspend flights between Kutaisi and Lyon from 22 October 2026, the Hungarian low-cost carrier has confirmed.
The airline said the move forms part of its regular review of route performance across Europe. Wizz Air did not announce a restart date for the link in its initial statement, describing the pause as temporary while it reshapes its network to match passenger demand.
What the airline said
In a statement, Wizz Air said it continuously monitors how each route performs so its network stays aligned with travel demand and so it can offer competitive fares on its busiest corridors.
"The airline regularly optimises its route network as part of standard practice, based on the results of these assessments," the company said.
Airlines routinely add, cut or seasonally adjust flights as ticket sales, fuel costs and airport charges shift. For low-cost carriers, thin or uneven demand on a point-to-point link can make year-round service harder to sustain without higher average fares or aircraft redeployed to stronger markets.
Kutaisi as a Wizz Air base
Kutaisi International Airport, also known as David the Builder airport, sits in western Georgia and has become a major hub for budget flights to European cities. Wizz Air operates a large share of Kutaisi's scheduled international departures, offering direct links that many travellers from Tbilisi, Batumi and the wider region use when fares or timetables suit their plans.
Lyon–Saint Exupéry serves France's second-largest metropolitan area and acts as a gateway to the Rhône-Alpes region. For Georgian residents, students and workers with ties to France, a direct Kutaisi option avoids backtracking through other European hubs when it is available.
What travellers should check
Passengers with tickets on or after 22 October 2026 should watch Wizz Air's booking channels and email notices for schedule changes, rebooking options or refunds according to the fare rules they purchased under.
Travellers planning France trips from western Georgia may need to consider alternative Wizz Air routes from Kutaisi, connections via other carriers from Tbilisi, or indirect itineraries through European hubs. Schedules and prices change frequently; final departure times and baggage policies should be confirmed on the airline's website or app before payment.
Wizz Air has not said whether Lyon will return to the Kutaisi timetable in a later season. Network updates elsewhere in Georgia will be announced separately if the carrier adds or restores other city pairs.
