Tbilisi Airport Expansion Begins With $150 Million Investment

TAV Georgia has launched a $150 million expansion project at Tbilisi International Airport, with work scheduled to run from 2026 to 2028.

The company, which operates Tbilisi and Batumi international airports, says the project will double the airport’s annual passenger capacity from five million to 10 million. Tbilisi Airport handled a record 5.4 million passengers in 2025, according to TAV Georgia.

Terminal and airside upgrades

The expansion includes an increase in passenger boarding bridges from five to 10, seven new remote aircraft stands, nine additional check-in counters, 24 passport-control points and two baggage belts.

TAV Georgia also plans to upgrade existing passenger areas and add retail, dining and business-lounge space, as well as expand parking near the terminal.

Representatives of TAV Georgia attended the July 13 launch ceremony alongside Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili. The project follows a January 2025 agreement between the Economy Ministry, United Airports of Georgia and TAV Georgia that extended the operator’s Tbilisi Airport concession until 2032 in return for the investment and capacity expansion.

Wider aviation plans

Officials say Georgia’s three international airports handled 8.5 million passengers in 2025. The government is also pursuing plans for a new international airport near Vaziani outside Tbilisi, which officials now expect to begin construction at the end of 2027 and open by the end of 2031.

The Vaziani facility is planned for annual capacity of about 20 million passengers and is expected to begin operations after the current Tbilisi Airport concession expires.
