Georgian courts handed down guilty verdicts against 13,921 people in the first six months of 2026, according to official figures — a 40% rise from 9,941 in the same period a year earlier.
The increase spans several offence categories, with drug-related cases accounting for the sharpest jump and a large share of the overall total.
Drug cases lead the rise
Convictions linked to drugs rose 90.1%, from 2,044 to 3,885. That means nearly one in three people convicted in January–June 2026 received a sentence in a drug-related case.
The figures do not break down offence types within the drug category, such as possession, trafficking or related charges.
Robbery, theft and traffic offences
Robbery convictions climbed 48.8% to 192 people. Hooliganism cases rose 45.2% to 61. Theft convictions increased 18.2%, from 1,528 to 1,806.
Sentences for breaches of road safety or vehicle operation rules grew 18.8%, to 385 people.
Some categories fall
Not every category moved upward. Convictions for rape fell 42.1%, from 19 to 11 people, in the same six-month window.
The statistics cover people who received guilty verdicts in the first half of the year and do not by themselves explain changes in crime rates, policing or prosecutorial practice.
