Georgia’s population stands at 3,929,581 people according to updated figures from the National Statistics Office — an increase of about 216,000, or 5.8%, compared with the 2014 census.
Who lives where
Women make up 52% of the population and men 48%. Urban residents account for 62% of the total, while 38% live in rural areas.
Tbilisi remains the largest concentration of population, home to roughly 1.3 million people, or about 34% of the national total. Batumi recorded one of the sharpest rises among major cities: its population grew 54% between 2014 and the latest count, from about 153,000 to 235,668.
Citizens and foreign residents
Georgian citizens number about 3.7 million, or 96.1% of the population. Among them, 8,800 hold dual citizenship. Foreign citizens account for 3.4% of residents, or roughly 134,000 people.
The largest groups of foreign nationals living in Georgia on a permanent basis include Russians (37,700), Indians (23,900), Ukrainians (11,500), Azerbaijanis (8,300) and Armenians (5,300).
