European airports are expected to stop offering plastic film wrapping for suitcases under new EU packaging regulations intended to reduce single-use waste.
The changes are expected to take effect from 1 January 2030. Plastic wrapping is currently used by some travellers to protect luggage or secure items while in transit.
A shift in airport services
The planned change would remove one common disposable-plastic service from airport terminals. Airports and service providers will need to adapt their luggage-wrapping offers to comply with the new packaging rules.
The announcement does not specify what alternatives will be available to passengers who use the service. Travellers may need to rely on reusable luggage covers, built-in suitcase locks or other non-disposable ways of securing their bags.
Hotel toiletries also affected
Hotels will also be expected to phase out small, one-time bottles of shampoo and other toiletries. These miniature containers are widely used in guest rooms but contribute to packaging waste after short stays.
The regulation is aimed at cutting unnecessary packaging across everyday services. Further implementation details and practical guidance for airports, hotels and travellers are expected ahead of the 2030 start date.
