German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) launched an EU-funded Georgian-language news service on Instagram on August 3, with plans to expand to additional digital platforms.
The service covers current affairs in Georgia, Europe, and globally, offering news tailored for Georgian-speaking audiences across the region and diaspora.
Regional media initiative
The project is financed by the European Union under the European Information Shield Initiative, a joint project led by DW and Fact-Checking and Media Literacy (FMM), alongside Polish broadcaster TVP World. The initiative aims to strengthen independent journalism and address disinformation across the South Caucasus.
Similar regional channels have been established as part of the effort, including an Armenian-language offering by FMM and an Azerbaijani-language service by TVP World. The three services plan to share content and coordinate coverage.
Editorial team structure
The project is funded for an initial 18 months, extending previous European media cooperation programs.
The Georgian editorial team comprises five to seven journalists under team lead Zura Karaulashvili, with most staff based in Germany and one journalist operating from Georgia. The launch follows Polish public broadcaster TVP's April rollout of VT Sakartvelo, another Georgian-language broadcast service.
